Dr. Margherita Sosio
I hold a degree in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Milan (my first loves were plants and flowers) and conducted my postdoctoral research at ETH, Zurich (plants and flowers were betrayed by microorganisms).
Before joining Naicons in 2007, I held positions as research scientist in different pharma companies including Biosearch Italia-Vicuron in Gerenzano (Italy), where I held various positions with increasing responsibility over my 20-year tenure.
I really enjoy working with passionate and promising young scientists with many ideas and an almost endless desire to learn (although sometimes I have to dampen their enthusiasm).
Margherita Sosio is co-founder of and Microbiology Director at Naicons Srl. Her expertise lies in microbial genetic and molecular biology, in particular in the genetics of antibiotic producers, including identification and characterization of antibiotic biosynthetic and resistance genes, in the screening of natural product for antimicrobial activity, and in the characterisation and development of antibiotics.
Margherita is the coordinator of the EU-funded project ‘LAntibiotic Production: Technology, Optimization and improved Process’ (FP7-KBBE-2009-3, 2010-2013, grant no. 245066).
She supervises Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) in the following projects: TRAIN Asap, FP7 for research, technological development and demonstration, GA 289285; Train2Target, H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016, 2017-2020GA no. 721484; INNOTARGETS, GA no. 956154, H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020, 2021-2024. Principal Investigator in the project H2020-BG-2014-2, NOMORFILM, GA. No. 634588, BG-03-2014; Novel marine biomolecules against biofilm.
Margherita has co-authored over 90 scientific papers and seven patent applications in the field of antibiotics.
